How solvent-based sealers behave
- Tend to sit closer to the surface and often deepen colour more noticeably, particularly on darker block paving.
- Generally more tolerant of slightly cooler or damper conditions during curing than water-based options.
- Carry a stronger odour during application and curing, which matters near open windows or occupied buildings.
- Often more resistant to oil and fuel staining once fully cured, which is relevant on driveways used by vehicles.
How water-based sealers behave
- Lower odour during application, which suits jobs near living spaces or in enclosed areas.
- Tend to allow the surface to breathe slightly more, letting trapped moisture escape rather than blister the film.
- Colour enhancement is usually more subtle than a solvent-based equivalent on the same stone.
- Cure times and application windows can be more sensitive to damp or cool weather.
Where breathability matters more than looks
On surfaces that sit on solid, less permeable bases, or in gardens with poor drainage underneath, a sealer that lets residual moisture escape reduces the risk of the film lifting or clouding from beneath. This is where the water-based case is strongest, independent of the colour argument.
On robust, well-drained surfaces this consideration matters less, and the choice comes down more to the finish and odour trade-offs above.
Matching sealer type to the job's practical constraints
A driveway being sealed in occupied weather with residents at home most of the day often favours a lower-odour water-based product for comfort. A job that needs to go ahead in cooler, less predictable weather may lean toward the more forgiving cure window of a solvent-based product.
Whichever type is chosen, the surface still needs to be clean, dry and — on block paving — properly re-sanded first, since sealer type doesn't change that groundwork requirement.
