Gravel is the most forgiving driveway surface to install and the least forgiving to neglect. There is no bound layer holding anything together, so every vehicle movement redistributes stone, every rain event moves fines downhill, and every gap in the surface becomes a place for a weed to establish.
The good news is that almost all gravel maintenance is simple, cheap and reversible. Nothing about it requires specialist chemistry. What it requires is a bit of regular attention and, in a few cases, fixing an installation shortcut that was taken years ago.
Why gravel migrates, and how to stop it
Stone moves for three reasons: vehicles push it, water carries it, and gravity takes it downhill. On a level drive with proper edging, movement is slow and easily corrected. On a sloping drive with no restraint, you will be shovelling gravel back up the hill indefinitely.
Edge restraint is the single most valuable investment. Timber, metal or concrete edging along both sides stops the lateral spread that accounts for most loss. Without it, gravel simply migrates into the lawn and the borders and disappears.
Depth matters too. Too deep and vehicles plough through it, creating ruts and making the drive unpleasant to walk on. A relatively shallow, well-compacted layer over a firm base performs far better than a deep loose one, which is counterintuitive but consistently true.
Grids and geotextiles: the real fix
- A cellular gravel grid confines stone in individual cells, which effectively stops migration and rutting entirely.
- Grids also spread vehicle load, so the drive stays level and drains better.
- A geotextile membrane beneath the gravel separates stone from soil, preventing the stone sinking and mud rising into it.
- A membrane also suppresses weeds growing from below, though it does nothing about seed landing on top.
- Retrofitting is disruptive but often cheaper than years of repeated topping up on a drive that keeps swallowing stone.
- On any slope worth mentioning, a grid is close to essential rather than optional.
Routine maintenance through the year
- Rake monthly to redistribute stone and level out the ruts before they deepen.
- Pull migrated gravel back from lawn edges and paths before it is lost to the borders.
- Top up thin patches with matching stone rather than waiting until the base shows through.
- Clear leaf litter promptly — decomposed leaves in gravel become the compost layer that weeds grow in.
- Keep drainage channels and any soakaway clear so water does not scour a channel through the surface.
- Fill ruts with fresh compacted material rather than just raking stone over the hollow, which lasts about a fortnight.
Weed control on gravel
Weeds on a well-built gravel drive grow almost entirely from above, in the organic material that accumulates between the stones. That means the most effective long-term control is keeping the gravel clean of debris rather than treating the ground beneath it.
Hand-pulling works well on gravel because the medium is loose and roots come out whole. Thermal weeding is also well suited, since there is nothing to damage. Chemical control is an option but has to be used carefully, as run-off from a permeable surface goes straight into the ground.
If weeds are coming up densely and uniformly across the whole drive, it usually means either that there is no membrane or that the gravel layer has become contaminated with soil and organic matter to the point where it is effectively a seedbed. In the latter case, the honest fix is to strip and replace the top layer of stone.
Potholes, ruts and mud
A pothole in gravel is a base failure showing through. Raking stone into it hides it briefly; the hole will reappear because the material beneath is not supporting the load. The proper repair is to dig out the soft material, fill with compacted hardcore or MOT type material, and dress with matching gravel on top.
Mud appearing through the stone means the gravel and the subsoil are mixing, which is what a geotextile membrane exists to prevent. Adding more gravel on top buys time but the mud will work its way up again. Excavating, laying a membrane and re-laying is the durable answer.
Ruts along wheel lines usually indicate too deep a loose layer or too soft a base. Grids solve this comprehensively.
Cleaning gravel, and its limits
Gravel cannot be pressure washed in place in any conventional sense — you would simply blast the stone around. What can be done is removing the top layer, cleaning or replacing it, and re-laying, which is worthwhile when stone has become badly discoloured or contaminated with soil.
For lightly dirty gravel, raking exposes cleaner faces and can noticeably freshen the appearance for very little effort. It is remarkable how much difference an hour with a rake makes to a tired-looking gravel drive.
Where gravel meets paved areas, the paved section can be cleaned normally — just protect the joint between the two so you are not washing stone into the drainage.
Choosing stone when you top up
- Angular stone locks together and stays put far better than rounded pea shingle, which rolls under tyres.
- Match the size and colour of the existing stone or the top-up will look like a patch for years.
- Smaller angular grades give a firmer, more walkable surface; larger stone is noisier and shifts more.
- Buy a little more than you calculate; you will always find another thin patch.
- Compact each top-up rather than leaving it loose on the surface.
